The Truth About SEO

We have decided to try and dispel some of the rumours and bad information surrounding search engine optimisation and what can make your site rank well in the major search engines. Whether you choose to work with us, someone else or even do your own search engine optimisation work, we hope you will find this of use.

Directory Submissions Are No Good For Ranking

Many SEO companies try and trick their customers by telling them “We will get you 1000 backlinks”, then proceed to submit their site to a large number of free directories. The simple truth is that these free directories have zero value when it comes to ranking your website in the search engines.  The only effect it does have is allow some unethical SEO companies to show you huge lists of places where they have got you backlinks. Although the list might be long, it really is not worth the paper it’s printed on. If any SEO companies tactics centre around free directory submissions, they should be avoided at all costs.

Reciprocal Links Are Worthless

Too many people are all under the false impression that reciprocal linking can benefit them in the search engines. This may have been true 5 years ago but today there is no truth in it. Google can immediately notice that two websites are linking back and forward between each other and discount those links.

Blog Commenting & Forum Posting Will Not Help You

This is another commonly abused tactic for some seo companies to show you impressive looking long lists of places that they have built backlinks, but like directory submissions they are close to worthless. 99% of blogs published on the internet are nofollow. This means the search engines will disregard those links anyway. The other 1% have been heavily spammed and will certainly not be doing you any good in the search engines. Google understands there is no editorial control over blog comments and forum posts, anyone can register and post whatever they like. Why would they trust these types of links at all when compared to genuine links that were placed in a website by the actual owner and not some fly by night spammer?
